I Hated Trading Journals (Until I Built This One)
Let's be honest: tracking your trades is boring.
I tried Excel spreadsheets. I tried Notion templates. I even tried a physical notebook. But after a week or two, I would always stop. "I'll do it later," I'd say. But later never came.
Then I looked back at my year and realized I had no idea why I lost money in March or made money in June. I was flying blind. That's when I decided I needed a better way.
Why Most Trading Journals Fail
The problem isn't that you are lazy. The problem is that manual data entry sucks.
1. Too Much Friction: Opening a spreadsheet, typing in the date, the price, the ticker, the P&L... it feels like homework.
2. No Visual Feedback: A list of numbers doesn't tell you anything at a glance. You need to see your progress.
3. Missing the Context: Most journals track "Entry: $100, Exit: $110." But they don't track the most important part: Why did you take the trade? Were you stresssed? Did you follow your plan?
What Actually Matters (The 80/20 Rule)
You don't need to track 50 different metrics. In my experience, only these 4 things actually help you improve:
1. The Setup (Why am I here?)
Was it a breakout? A reversal? News? If you can't categorize it, you are just guessing.
2. The Execution (Did I follow the plan?)
This is huge. You can have a losing trade that was a good trade because you followed your rules. You can also have a winning trade that was a bad trade because you got lucky. Track your discipline, not just your P&L.
3. The Emotion (How did I feel?)
"I felt anxious the whole time." "I was bored." "I was revenge trading." This is where the real gold is hidden.
4. The Result (P&L)
Obviously, we need to know if we made money.
Introducing the Profit & Loss Calendar
I built this tool because I wanted something visual. I wanted to see a calendar view where green days were green and red days were red.
Instead of endless rows in Excel, I can now look at my month and say, "Wow, I never make money on Fridays. deep down I probably just want to start the weekend early." Boom. Insight unlocked.
See It In Action
Stop wrestling with spreadsheets. Our Profit & Loss Calendar is designed to be the journal you actually use. It's visual, intuitive, and frankly, kind of fun to fill out.
Try It FreeJust Start. Today.
You don't have to use my tool. You can use a napkin if you want. But please, start writing down your trades today.
Future you (with a much bigger bank account) will thank you for it.
